Starting up: Preparing for your first trade show? Here's some advice

A month ago, I wrote a column here about preparing for my first trade show - the National Stationery Show in New York - to promote my new product: Quote Joy, a series of themed quotation cards printed on 100-percent recycled cardstock, packaged with an easel in a metal tin.
I promised to write another column to let you know how the show went, what worked and lessons learned. I discovered a lot and have some tips to share:

Smaller tech firms bolster industry amid job cuts
|

Analysts say Idahos fast-growing number of start-ups and small tech firms has helped bolster employment in the industry, as workers experience job cuts at some of the states largest technology companies, Micron and Hewlett-Packard. According to Idaho Department of Labor figures, Micron shed between 2,100 jobs last year, and H-P eliminated another 300. Overall thats meant that large-firm employment (defined as companies providing more than 500 jobs) fell in the state by about 4 percent from 2006 to 2007.

Boise Companies Clean Up at TechLaunch 5.0

A healthcare information technology company took this years Entrepreneurial Idol at TechLaunch 5.0, held in Boise May 28 29. Caring Technologies, based in Boise, walked away with the $10,000 grand prize sponsored by Idaho National Laboratories (INL). The Perkins Coie Peoples Choice $5,000 Award was given to Syeapps, Inc. of Twin Falls.

Prize Surprise: Entrepreneurs are competing for the gold and getting much more in the process

Contrary to popular belief, winning isn't everything. But for companies that are trying to raise money, winning may be the first thing. Across the country, business plan competitions are helping both early and growth-stage companies jump-start their fundraising. And for one Weston, Wisconsin-based company, U.S. Trail-maps Inc., winning a cash prize in a business plan competition unlocked the door to even bigger sums from angel investors and venture capitalists.

WaterCooler project opens in Downtown Boise
|

With 8 small businesses already in the building, the developer may expand the project to other sites.
Mayor Dave Bieter lit a huge light bulb Wednesday to mark the opening of developer Mark Rivers' Boise WaterCooler project - an incubation center for entrepreneurs and small business in Downtown Boise.

Idaho Grant Program To Help Small Businesses Statewide
|
|
|
Where will the next life-changing technology be discovered?
It could emerge from one of the Idaho companies who qualify for dozens of $3,000 grants available through the Idaho Department of Commerce. Qualifying companies would need to use the funds to seek much larger federal Small Business Innovation Research grants or other federal grants to further research and development of technologies.
