By Len Frazier - Special to the Idaho Statesman; Edition Date: 11/13/08. Today's economic crisis has the potential to produce tomorrow's Apple, Microsoft or Google. Question: What do 1938, 1968, 1975, 1976 and 1997 have in common? Answer: They were all terrible years to start a company.

Move ahead with starting a new business, but don't cling to running it long-term; by Mark Solon - Special to the Idaho Statesman (Edition Date - 10/23/08): Let me ask you something: If your phone rang today and you discovered that your distant Aunt Sadie had passed away and left you her enormous fortune, would you open up an online trading account and start buying and selling stocks with your inheritance?

By Dan Aragon - Special to the Idaho Statesman; Edition Date: 10/16/08: Fifty bucks and the freshly emptied garage of my nondescript West Valley home - that's where every decent Treasure Valley success story begins, right?
If you would have told me then, as I looked around at those plain, white, unfinished walls, that seven years later I might legitimately affect the globe, I would have thrown you out. Proves you just never know, but there is only one way to find out.

by Rick Hoover - Special to the Idaho Statesman; Edition Date: 10/09/08: My company, Computer Measurement Laboratory, is pioneering real-time software measurement technologies for security and reliability of software applications.
We wouldn't have the opportunity to pursue this technology without strong funding from the federal government. Through Small Business Innovation Research grants, we have solidly launched our company, and we are hiring additional employees.

By Kathleen Haase - Special to the Idaho Statesman; Edition Date: 10/02/08: I moved to Idaho two years ago for personal reasons. I never expected to be a leader in starting a new industry here - one I believe will drive Idaho toward more economic diversity and provide more opportunities for jobs.
My background is in the film industry, and I'm able to use that experience toward helping numerous businesses get a toehold in the state's fledgling film industry.

By Theresia W. Kituku - Special to the Idaho Statesman; Edition Date: 09/25/08; Starting any business presents challenges. Add an emotional element and the challenges can be not only exciting but overwhelming. When the opportunity to own and operate a child-care center presented itself after Easter Seals announced that it was closing The Growing Place, I accepted the challenge, unaware of just how difficult it might be.

By Chris Kaltenecker - Special to the Idaho Statesman - Edition Date: 09/18/08 - After 45 years as an accounting manager in the engineering and construction industry and 10 years of involvement in a statewide Idaho quality program, I reluctantly retired. Shortly thereafter, I decided to offer those many years of experience in business to anyone struggling to understand the steps involved in starting a business or those small business owners needing advice on how to survive a crisis.

By Mark Solon - Special to the Idaho Statesman - Edition Date: 09/11/08: As a fairly competitive guy, I find it hard to admit defeat, particularly in a public forum like this. You may recall that I wrote a column before Memorial Day regarding my plans to conduct an experiment and eschew e-mail through Labor Day, 14 weeks "off the grid."

Edition Date: 09/04/08.
Want to know a secret? Instead of being a fast follower, Idaho leads in the churn that makes economies vibrant. No matter the source - Inc., Brookings, Business Week - Idaho ranks in the top 10 for start-up business activity. More often than not, we are in the top five, and on a few occasions we are number one.
