"Idaho still needs to beef up support for tech" - by Ken Dey. I wrap up my second tour at the Idaho Statesman on Friday. By next week, I'll be the new public relations coordinator at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. It's a bittersweet departure. I'm looking forward to the new opportunity and the growth potential the health care industry offers, but at the same time I'll miss my many colleagues and the opportunity to in some way serve as a voice for Idaho's high technology industry.

A bipartisan group of senators think they've found a way to overcome objections that have derailed past efforts to reduce health insurance costs for small businesses. New legislation introduced by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, would encourage states to set up health care purchasing pools for small businesses and the self-employed. The Small Business Health Options Program also calls for the establishment of a nationwide purchasing pool in 2011.

Gov. C.L. Butch Otter has vetoed legislation to repeal income tax credits for research activity. Having just signed the personal property tax relief bill into law, it would be inconsistent and unwise to then approve legislation eliminating tax relief for some of those businesses as well as some of Idahos larger employers, Otter wrote in a letter to Speaker of the House Lawerence Denney.

According to the 11th annual Cyberstates report, the spike in investments could be a good sign for the state's technology industry. Idaho ranks among the lowest states for job growth in the high-tech industry, but a new report shows that a spike in investment may be a sign of a brighter future for the sector.

In my garage toolbox, I have a special tool that releases the spring that holds a set of automobile drum-brake shoes in place. If you've ever done a brake job, you know what a pain it is to do one without the right tools. I think I last used that tool in 1988 while in the Army at Fort Benning, Ga. to do a brake job on the 1971 Ford F100 that I had just bought for $700. Two decades later, the tool still sits in my toolbox just in case I need it again. This week, Idaho legislators started cleaning out Idaho's economic development tool box, and I have to wonder if they may be throwing away some important tools they may need again someday.
