Twenty years ago I left Boise to study economics and finance at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Three years later, I was studying business law at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. People in Nashville and New Orleans were fascinated to meet someone from Idaho.

In 1999, business attorney Nick Miller came up with the idea of creating a conference to showcase Idaho's most promising start-up technology companies to potential investors. With the help of many volunteers and the support of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Intermountain Venture Forum was launched in 2000 with five companies and a small group of investors.

I am one of the many people affected by the slowing of the real estate market in the Treasure Valley. Formerly a broker, today I maintain a limited involved in the real estate community, but it has been clear for awhile that I needed to find another source of income.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced today that it is seeking proposals for high-risk research projects to develop innovative technologies for inspecting, monitoring and evaluating critical components of the nation's roadways, bridges, and drinking and wastewater systems. The competition for cost-shared research and development (R&D) support is the first to be announced by NIST's newly established Technology Innovation Program (TIP) in an effort to address critical societal challenges.

A month ago, I wrote a column here about preparing for my first trade show - the National Stationery Show in New York - to promote my new product: Quote Joy, a series of themed quotation cards printed on 100-percent recycled cardstock, packaged with an easel in a metal tin.
