Kimberly, ID The National Science Foundation recently selected Conservation Seeding & Restoration, Inc. (CSR) as a recipient of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant totaling $98,215. The research project, scheduled for the second half of 2008, will consist of a feasibility study centered on using spray-on biological soil crusts for arid land restoration.

CSR received a $4,000 Idaho Small Business Assistance Fund grant from the state last year as an incentive for Idaho businesses to apply for federal research and development funding. Using the state’s and Idaho TechConnect’s services, CSR received coaching on the SBIR application process, as well as being connected to a state-wide SBIR workshop and proposal review resources.

Headquartered in Kimberly and employing a total of 36 people, CSR specializes in wild land seeding and restoration of arid landscapes and has implemented full service reclamation projects spanning from urban landscapes to large spatial areas across the western United States. “We are very excited to have been involved with the process including the help from TechConnect culminating in this exciting award and opportunity to improve the way that restoration is done in the western United States,” said Steven Paulsen, General Manager/Principal Investigator Conservation Seeding & Restoration Inc.

Organized into five departments – Biology, Seed and Plant Production, Design, Stewardship, and Construction, CSR offers expertise in site analysis, land scale planning, plant propagation and seed collection, NEPA, storm water compliance, biological monitoring, invasive weed control, design, re-vegetation, soils science, statistical analysis, and GPS/GIS analysis. CSR has worked with private landowners, industry, state and local municipalities, and large scale federal government projects to restore land to native plant communities. Projects range from oil developments in Wyoming, to restoration projects in and around Idaho, to native landscape construction to native seed collection and propagation. Clients include Boise City, Idaho Power and the Sawtooth National Forest.
